About Shanghai

Itsukaichi, since 1975.

Founded by 横田多栄子, Shanghai is now run by her grandson, third-generation owner Susumu Yamaguchi. A full renovation in 2021 created seven private rooms, two tables and four counter seats. The interior received an Excellence Award in the Yakiniku Restaurant Design Category at the 2nd Restaurant Design Awards (2022), hosted by Izakaya JAPAN / Yakiniku Business Fair.

Sauce and kimchi

Our founder came from Amakusa in Kumamoto. She loved fish and preferred a light sauce. As our third-generation owner says, “Shanghai’s signature sauce exists because of our grandmother, who founded the restaurant.”

Homemade at Shanghai

Sauce
Our founding grandmother’s recipe, with a light flavour
Kimchi
Made with salted squid rather than ami (tiny shrimp), for an easy-to-enjoy flavour
Garlic
Japanese garlic, peeled in our kitchen

Grated garlic without additives turns green over time

The flavour has stayed the same since we opened.

A local restaurant for 100 years.

We aim to be a restaurant that brings joy to many people and stays part of the community for 100 years.

When we first opened, two pachinko parlours called Taiyo and Chugoku stood across the street. My grandfather worked at Chugoku, so the family was thinking of a name related to China. He was a sign maker, and we liked the Shanghai logo he drew himself. That became our name.

I am the founder’s grandson and the third-generation owner. I moved from Japanese cuisine into yakiniku, marking 15 years at Shanghai in 2025. I hope you can spend unhurried time with the people who matter to you in our private rooms.

Interior

A full renovation in 2021 transformed Shanghai into a space centred on private rooms. The interior features plenty of wood and Korean-inspired design.

Kumiko lattice doors and lanterns frame a calm setting for your meal. The ventilation equipment was also renewed as part of the renovation.
